Standing tall at 6’5”, 320 pounds, Tristan Wirfs has become a human barricade through two years in the NFL. Originally from Mount Vernon, Iowa,
Tristan attended Mount Vernon High School, where he played both as both an offensive lineman and defensive lineman.
Between his junior and senior years, Tristan recorded 66 tackles, five sacks, a fumble recovery, a pick-six, and a punt block returned for a touchdown. Tristan’s senior year performance earned him the district’s offensive line MVP award, Class 2A Iowa Preps Offensive Lineman of the Year, and a selection to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Simultaneously, Tristan also lettered in wrestling and track, winning state championships in both sports. Tabbed a four-star recruit and ranked as high as the number two overall player in Iowa (Rivals), Tristan accepted an in-state offer from the University of Iowa, a short drive from his hometown.
Tristan was an immediate impact player for the Hawkeyes after stepping on campus for the first time in 2017, seeing time in 10 games during the season and starting in eight at right tackle. Notably Tristan started and played every offensive snap in wins over No. 3 Ohio State and Nebraska, in which the team totaled 487 yards and 505 yards respectively. He was later named an honorable mention to the Big Ten All-Freshman team by BTN.com. Promoted to a full-time starter in 2018, Tristan started in all 12 of his appearances at right tackle while playing every offensive down in eight, as Iowa finished the year 9-4 and the AP No. 25 team of the year.
In five separate games, Tristan was a part of offensive efforts with over 400 total yards, including a 38-14 win over Northern Texas that consisted of 479 total yards on offense and a 83-0 win over Illinois with 400 total yards on offense. Upon the conclusion of the season, the Big Ten coaches and media named Tristan an All-Big Ten honorable mention.
Entering his final season in 2019, Tristan started all 13 of Iowa’s games, seeing 10 starts at right tackle and three starts at left tackle. In three different games, the Hawkeyes finished with over 400 total offensive yards, including a 644 offensive yard performance in a 48-3 win over Middle Tennessee. For the third straight year, the Hawkeyes won a bowl game, as Tristan was named to the First Team All-Big Ten and earned the Rimington-Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year award. With an attractive draft profile, Tristan announced that he’d be entering his name in the 2020 draft at the end of the season.
In April of 2020, Tristan was drafted with the 13th overall selection by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, jumpstarting his professional career. Instantly, Tristan was named a starter, starting all 20 games for Tampa during the year, including four post season games. Tristan was a part of a Buccaneers offensive unit that averaged 384.1 total yards per game and scored 30.8 points per game, ranking 6th and 3rd in the entire league respectively. Tampa Bay would go on to win their first Super Bowl in 18 years that season in a 31-9 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, a game in which Tristan started and helped gain 340 offensive yards. As reigning champions in 2021, Tristan and the Buccaneers clinched their first NFC South division title since 2007 while averaging 405.9 yards per game and 30.1 points per game, both 2nd in the NFL. Tristan’s efforts on the year gave him First-Team All Pro recognition and a Pro Bowl selection, both the first of his career.
Still with a lengthy career ahead of him, Tristan is looking to only improve from here on out, having already made himself a household name in the NFL.
